      BSY letter spells out how exporters mined the gaps

     In the letter that he wrote recently to Union Mines Minister B K Handique seeking a ban on iron ore exports, Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa gave statistics showing that consistently since 2003, the amount of iron ore exported from the state had been significantly more than the amount for which mining permits were granted, sometimes almost double.

     Conceding that Karnataka’s exchequer “has suffered heavy losses” owing to unbridled export of mineral wealth, Yeddyurappa joined hands with Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh yesterday to reiterate his demand to ban iron ore exports at the National Development Council (NDC) meeting.

     “Till the time a decision on the ban is pending,” he told the meeting, “we can at least seek permission to allow Karnataka to ban export of iron ore.”

     Yeddyurappa’s letter to Handique, accessed by The Indian Express, shows that in 2003-04, permits were granted for mining of 25.27 lakh tonnes of iron ore; the amount exported was 45.76 lakh tonnes. The least gap was in the year 2005-06, and the maximum in 2009-10. Incidentally, it was during this period that the fortunes of the Bellary brothers saw a phenomenal rise.
